The parking area is just a short distance (5-minute walk) from where you must be to depart on your cruise. The Premium Cruise gets you an extra 15 minutes to explore Spirit Island, though no one can walk out to Spirit Island. The cruise also stops and lets you soak in the views at Pincushion Bay. Most importantly, the Premium Cruise is available only in the evening, allowing you to have the best possible light on Spirit Island, which is ideal for photographers. After around 40 minutes, we arrived at the dock at Spirit Island. We were very excited to go exploring and knew we only had a limited amount of time, so we tried to be one of the first people off the boat. As we headed towards Spirit Island, we learned all about the lake and enjoyed the views from the comfort of inside the boat. Even though it was cold outside, the heater kept us nice and toasty inside.

The cruise provides excellent views you otherwise wouldn’t see, and experiencing the sacred Spirit Island is a cherry on top that you don’t want to miss. TIPIf you’d like to see Maligne Lake in winter, the Maligne Lake Road is open and offers a gorgeous drive through the snowy landscape. However, the lake usually freezes in November and is covered with snow till April/May. The enclosed boat accommodates around 30 people, so we could stay away from the wind or go outside on the small deck.

Do not bring anything you are not willing to lose to the lake. Ensure car keys and other items are kept within a pocket or carry those items attached to your person. Canoes and kayaks are available to rent from the boathouse and can be booked online. Our cruise boats are covered, but there may be a bit of water spray if the windows are open when the boat picks up speed.
On the way back, you’ll get to take in some last-minute views before you dock again at the Maligne Lake Boathouse and Chalet. It’s best to leave your furry friends at home as they are not permitted on the boat, but pets on a leash can enjoy all the other wonders that Maligne Lake offers. There are three types of boats that hold between 38 and 50 passengers. There are not many amenities available actually on the boat, and basically what you will find are wooden seats. Do your business beforehand because there is no bathroom on board.

The hour-and-a-half panoramic cruise heads to Spirit Island 14 km up the lake. It’s around a half-hour to the island, where guests get 15 minutes off the boat for photos before the return journey unless they purchase a longer tour (we’ll get into that later).

After parking, follow the short trail through a grove of trees to Maligne Lake, the ticket office, boathouse, Day Lodge, and the Historic Chalet. Forest Park Hotel is located on the edge of town, so there are many wildlife viewings. It has modern rooms with upgraded kitchenettes, an amazing onsite restaurant, a big indoor pool with a hot tub, and more. You can rent a kayak, canoe or pedal boat right on the shore of Maligne Lake (from 65 CAD/hour).
Whistlers Inn is the perfect place to stay if you are looking for a nice escape right in town and only a short walk from popular bars, attractions, and restaurants in Jasper. They also have a rooftop hot tub (pictured above) – need I say more? If you ask us to pick just two things we love about this area wildlife and waterfalls would definitely be up there! However, simply stopping by the lake to look at the water only gives you a fraction of an idea of how amazing this lake actually is.
If you want to really experience the serenity of the lake, try and book as early in the day as possible. As for time of year, the cruise is available from June to mid-October. Maligne Lake is roughly 45km from the Town of Jasper, and it’s recommended that you take at least one hour to get to the lakeshore from Downtown Jasper. To get there, get on the Yellowhead Hwy and take a right on Maligne Lake Road.

Thank you guys for making this vacation truly an awesome experience. If you’re arriving in Alberta via plane then I can’t recommend getting a rental car enough. Canada is a large country and traveling between cities and even just getting out to some of the best places to visit in Alberta requires transport.
